Genesis
Everything has a beginning, and this, is ours. I have always wanted a farm since I was a little girl. In my fifties, I finally made that a reality. I had researched various breeds of nearly every farm animal you can think of. When I decided to start with chickens, I knew I wanted to focus on a poultry farm.
In addition to loving critters, I love kids. After spending years at other jobs, I finally realized I was meant to be a preschool teacher. I began sharing my chicken adventures with my class. To take it further, I decided to incubate quail eggs in our classroom. The thought was I wouldn't be tempted to keep them like I would chicken chicks and would just find them homes. Boy was I wrong. It was an amazing experience and I fell in love with them. So within about six months of getting chickens, I now had quail too.
Now that I have chickens and quail, I figure I may as well go all in and add turkeys. I look forward to getting some next spring, probably bourbon red, slate and royal palm. Not only are they tasty, but are beautiful as well. While I choose to have feathered friends for practical purposes, I am also about aesthetics. I definitely enjoy spending time with some of the beautiful creatures God created for this amazig world.
We lovingly provide hatchable eggs and poultry to families and homesteads. We keep only heritage chickens and turkeys, not only because of their traits, but so that we can promote their status as well. A heritage breed is one that adheres to the breed standard, produces naturally, makes good mothers, forages well, grows slowly, and lives longer. Check out The Livestock Conservancy to learn more about Heritage breeds. Their site has an abundance of information. Their mission is to protect endangered livestock and poultry, This is something we should all care about. We need to maintain the ability to produce our own food, not being reliant completely on stores that are part of a fragile food system.
